The straitjacket escape was one of Harry Houdini’s most legendary tricks. Houdini would free himself from a regulation straitjacket while hanging upside down atop a tall building in front of thousands of onlookers. Houdini died in Detroit on Halloween in 1926. Named for the narrow body of water connecting Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, “Detroit” translates to “strait” in French.
